How to Choose the Right PTAC Unit for Your Property
Choosing a Packaged Terminal Air Conditioner (PTAC) for your property is more than picking a unit off the shelf. Your goal is to find a long-lasting, energy-efficient solution that fits your space, meets your performance needs, and gives your guests reliable comfort. Whether you're outfitting a boutique hotel, renovating a care facility, or replacing outdated units, SquarePeg can help you select the best PTAC unit for your hotel, senior living center, or commercial space.
KNOW YOUR BTU NEEDS
The size of your room determines the ideal BTU (British Thermal Units) rating. Too high, and the unit will short-cycle. Too low, and it won’t keep up. Note: warmer climates or rooms with lots of sunlight may require the higher end of the range.
As a general rule:
Small rooms (150–300 sq. ft.) require 7,000–9,000 BTU. Featured product: Amana DigiSmart Electric Heat PTAC, 7k BTU
Medium rooms (300–450 sq. ft.) need 9,000–12,000 BTU. Featured product: Amana Electric Heat PTAC, 9k BTU
And for larger rooms or corner units (450–700 sq. ft.), opt for 12,000–15,000 BTU. Featured product: Amana Electric Heat PTAC, 12k BTU

ELECTRIC HEAT OR HEAT PUMP?
PTACs offer two main heating options: electric resistance (coils) and heat pumps.
Electric Heat: Reliable in any climate and provides instant warmth, it uses more electricity and is less efficient for long-term use, which makes it ideal for colder climates or properties that only need heating occasionally. Featured product: Amana Electric Heat PTAC.
Heat Pump: Highly energy-efficient in moderate climates, it offers energy savings by reversing the refrigeration cycle to provide heat. It may struggle in freezing temperatures and often requires a backup heat source in colder regions, so it is better suited for properties in milder regions with year-round use. Featured product: Amana Heat Pump PTAC.

CONSIDER NOISE LEVELS
In hospitality and healthcare settings, quiet operation is essential. The best PTAC units will have sound ratings below 60 decibels and multiple fan speeds to control airflow and minimize disruption. Featured product: Amana Distinctions PTAC.
MATCH THE BRAND AND SLEEVE
If you’re replacing an existing unit, double-check compatibility with your wall sleeve and grille. Matching the brand and series can help you avoid unnecessary retrofitting or airflow issues.
And if your property is part of a hotel brand or franchise, check if there are specific PTAC brand standards. For example, Hyatt, Wyndham, and Choice Hotels have requirements for compatibility with certain thermostats and features. Always verify that your chosen PTAC meets these standards.
